티 락 T. RakMinot, Chicago, Bangkok, Seoul April 19 BloggerI'm going to try Blogger, see if it is better than this MSN thing. This seems to be better for photos, and Blogger for text. I'll try to keep both going. I fell an urge to do some more writing, so maybe this will be fun. Stay tuned. Good night, and good luck. My Daily RoutineBeing a news junkie of sorts, I have often had to rely on different sources while overseas. My first trip to Korea in 2002 brought me to Suji, a "satellite city" outside Seoul, built to ease the overcrowding of the Korean capital (population 10-12 million.) In my tiny, but efficient, apartment, I watched BBC World on my cable TV. I really grew to appreciate "The Beeb" for it's global reach, and sober approach to journalism, as opposed to the madness of Faux, er, Fox News and CNN. When I was living in Bangkok in 2003, I didn't have cable, so I relied on the Bangkok Post (an English language paper) and Thai newscast that occasionally had English subtitles or English-speaking translators speaking over Thai-language anchors (a surreal experience, trust me.) But then, I bought a computer, and I was able to rely on the prestigious news sources of Yahoo, Google, and other trusted sources with silly names (and double "o"'s.) I also discovered blogs, some sober, mostly left-wing, some outrageous (like the delicious Rude Pundit.) It was refreshing to read things you never hear about, and things I could agree with without smashing my head into the computer (see graphic below.) When I moved on to Busan, Korea in 2004, I didn't have BBC on my cable, but had CNN/International, not as good as BBC, but vastly superior to CNN/USA, meaning they weren't consumed with missing white women and other stories that belonged on the local news. But I had my blogs, and they were (and still are) a part of my daily routine. When my computer blew up a couple months ago, I was feeling withdrawl as any news junkie would, and am now much better as I have a sleek new Sony Vaio notebook to bring me my daily fix. But still, I am tempted to smash my head into the screen. So, how long until the current regime in Washington is gone? I may have to renew my passport. So it goes. |
